An innovative short mobility programme combining hybrid and classroom learning

The Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) is a short mobility programme funded by the European Union.

It enables :

  • Students ;
  • Doctoral students ;
  • Teacher-researchers ; 
  • Staff ;

to carry out a hybrid mobility abroad over a short period (from 5 to 30 days).

It combines :

  • A physical mobility abroad (from 5 to 30 days), with 
  • A virtual activity before, during or after the physical mobility (no minimum or maximum duration required).

Participants in an Erasmus+ Hybrid Intensive Programme are awarded an Erasmus grant.  

The eligibility criteria for the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP)

  • At least 3 higher education institutions from 3 different programme countries, including the coordinating institution;
  • Minimum 15 participants from the partner institutions (excluding coordinating participants);
  • Duration of physical mobility: between 5 and 30 days;
  • Virtual activity: no duration required; No funding;
  • Obligation to provide added value: teaching not taught or providing new perspectives;
  • The majority or all of the BIP's activities must be training activities and a minority must be research activities.

Funding for the Hybrid Intensive Programme (BIP)

The coordinating institution can receive a grant of between €6000 and €8000 maximum depending on the number of participants (excluding the coordinating institution).

These funds can be used for

Operating expenses :

  • Travel costs of the speakers (excluding those from the coordinating institution);
  • Production of documents and teaching materials;
  • Field trips/excursions/cultural activities
  • Communication ;
  • Translation and interpretation;
  • Administrative and logistical tasks (possibility of a student shift);

Expenditure on teaching hours outside of the training model:

  • Teaching hours outside the statutory hours or the additional hours envelope of the components.

The following are not funded :

  • Participants' travel costs;
  • Participants' accommodation costs (Participants must be sent by their home institution with an Erasmus+ grant);
  • Teaching hours included in the training offer of a course model.

BIP Anime: first example of the implementation of an Erasmus+ hybrid intensive programme at the University of Strasbourg

The first Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) of the University of Strasbourg was set up in the framework of the Anime network (Academic Network on Inclusiveness, Multilingualism and Excellence).

This programme took place in Strasbourg from 4 to 8 July 2022. It was preceded by a virtual activity in May 2022.

It involved :

4 universities from Erasmus+ programme countries members of the Anime network:

  • St. Kliment Ohridski University (Bulgaria)
  • Palacky Olomouc University (Czech Republic)
  • Babes-Bolyai University (Romania)
  • University of Strasbourg, coordinating institution (France)

A mixed audience (students, administrative and academic staff): 15 external participants and participants from the University of Strasbourg

The participation in this Blended Intensive Programme resulted in recognition for students (3 ECTS) and staff (A certificate of participation).
